Rocker Meets Old Preacher

I was in Edinburgh the other weekend. What a beautiful city! On the sunday I went to a church called Bellevue Baptist Church and got talking to one of the members of the congregation.

Apparently, about 15 years ago, Humphrey, the ageing preacher of this church, had been preaching, and in through the door walked attention seeking schlock-rocker Alice Cooper! Afterwards, the horror loving American complemented Humphrey on his sermon and now I often hear the news that Alice has become a Christian. Maybe that humble little preacher planted the seed that eventually resulted in this (seemingly) unlikely event.

Kofi Annan, Britains oldest man, 45, cot-death.

Born 1960 in Fife, Scotland entered the priesthood aged 19. After 12 years and some 600 books published, became England Football Manager. A relatively successful 10 years in the job winning two World Cups and a European Cup was suddenly cut short after a tight 1-1 draw to Brazil forced him to resign. In 2003, Kofi shocked the world by claiming to be the latest incarnation of Buddha, dismissed world hunger as camera trickery and invented the worlds first underwater motorised tie-rack.

Puns of the Week

There is nothing funnier, nothing cleverer, nothing more eye-ball rollingly pathetic than a pun. Here are three examples that came to my attention over the weekend.

1) Frank Zappa - Sheik Yerbouti

Frank even looks Middle Eastern which helps enhance the amusement of the cover. Features a song called "The Sheik Yerbouti Tango."








2) Cliche Guevara

I met a bloke last weekend who had something similar on his T-shirt. A graffitti artist somewhere in the UK obviously had a similar idea.




3) Sparks - Gratuitous Sax and Senseless Violins

The example of an album title that becomes more well known than the album itself. Features song titles such as "Frankly, Scarlett, I don't Give a Damn" and "Now That I Own the BBC".

Forever Vanishing: Tom Hanks

Whenever PRHs (permanently receding hairlines) are brought up in conversation (and aren't they always!) one's mind immediately thinks of Tom Hanks. He is this weeks featured celebrity.



That's right, he's the man with an incredibly "Big" forehead, "Terminal" male pattern baldness, and a full head of hair that seems to be on the "Road to Perdition". But it's been like that for about 25 years!

Rocker and Record-Breaker Fall Victim of Pun

In one of the craziest pieces of news I have seen for a long time, I read that off-the-rails Pete Doherty celebrated his release from rehab with heroin.

...yaghtswoman, Ellen MacArthur.

Yes, a very unlikely couple, and as you can see from the picture, rock and yaghts don't mix easily. Incidentally I was reading the Metro the other day and came across "Yaghtswoman declared bankrupt". For a split second I thought it was referring to the aforementioned overexposed, and probably single Ellen MacArthur. Alas, it was not.

She did some amazing things going about in that boat and being brave and stuff, but in my cruel mind I was secretly hoping that it was Ellen that was having money problems, as that would really put an ironic twist on the story.

Sorry Ellen.

P.S. As you can see, there is a spelling mistake in this post. It was drawn to my attention by a comment made by "Aaron". I was going to correct the mistake but I felt that by doing that, it would take something of the comedy and intelligence away from the said comment.

Muji Bland Loyalty

Back last year, I attended an "invite only" birthday party celebration for Muji at its Birmingham store. Every visitor was given a complimentary goody bag worth £5 and as much Japanese beer Asahi as they could stomach. Unfortunately, the evening descended into chaos as various drunk, middle-class types started throwing minimalist furniture at each other, but it did start my love-affair with the shop. (Incidentally, it started another love affair as I combined the evening with a "first-date", but that's another story).

Muji is a great home and lifestyle store from Japan. I love the place, I recieve their emails regularly (Muji's, not Japan's). The trouble is, the shop is home to some of the plainest, dullest and most unintersting design around. Nowhere is this more apparent than the clothing department, home to over-priced Communist style attire that even the Puritans would call boring (pictured).

However, it's not all bad, I love their hammocks, and the stationary is pleasant. They were selling some very nice looking speakers made out of cardboard recently.
